Individuality
Exhibit: Jesus Christ Superstar Rock Opera
Benchmark: Individuality
Skills: Ability to move out of my comfort zone
During the beginning months of 2015 I joined the cast of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar set to play in the Michigan Theatre of Jackson, I had joined the cast through a family friend who’s sister was the director. She had heard me sing before and knew that it would be something that I was possibly interested in. I really enjoyed being a part of the Jesus Christ Superstar Cast and I am extremely grateful for the friendships, and memories I made while I was there.
At first rehearsals were something I jumped right into since they were just choir rehearsals with everyone learning the music. However, once everyone learned the music then we moved on to choreography and assumed our roles as different characters. During the course of the play I had many different minor roles; I was a reporter, a leper, a hippy, and a prostitute. Now before you get any big ideas the majority of these roles just included me dancing across the stage singing or being up on a platform and singing and dancing. Nevertheless, the musical as a whole pushed my comfort zone a lot. I had never acted before let alone tried to dance and sing to something that was actually choreographed and wasn’t just me singing with a hairbrush as a microphone in my bedroom. Aside from that, most of the actors in the play had been acting for many years. They were all professionals and knew exactly what they had to do. It was really cool to get to be apart of a group of such talented people and I learned so much from them. The director and other cast members were all extremely helpful with making me feel comfortable but nevertheless it was still nerve wracking. I was always very hyper on the nights that we had shows and everyone told me it was just nerves.
Being a member of the cast pushed me and challenged me each day. I am extremely grateful for the experience as it will help me in my future career and young adult life. In my future career as a music therapist this will help me to be able to take on tasks that are out of my comfort zone. The play showed me that sometimes stepping outside of my comfort zone is a good thing! Maybe stepping out of my comfort zone in my future career will come in the form of interviewing for a new job with a higher position or maybe it will simply be during that first couple of months as a music therapist as I become used to working with people. In my young adult life this experience will be immensely helpful to me as I go through college. By majoring in music I will have to take vocal lessons and perform monthly. I will be required to step out of my comfort zone in order to get a good grade! Being a member of the cast and performing with so many gifted people was an amazing experience and having multiple different roles really pushed me outside of my comfort zone but I am extremely grateful for the experience.
