Academics: Social Studies

Exhibit: Government Bill: Allowing Teachers To Have Guns In School
    Ancient Civilizations Test
Benchmark: Academics
Skills: Top pieces of work in Social Studies

Throughout high school you take many different courses but they always include your four core subjects: Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. Social Studies has never been a subject that I loved but I have never hated it. Actually I was fairly good at it and even though I have taken all of the required courses for social studies that I need to graduate I actually miss it now that I don’t have one. For my two exhibits for social studies I chose a Bill that we created just like you would if you were working in the government today and also an Ancient Civilizations test. My bill was about allowing teachers to have a concealed carry permit and actually be able to have it with them at school. I chose this because I believed that I could create a valid argument for not only the safety of the teachers but for the safety of the students. My ancient civilizations test allowed me to gain a better understanding of different cultures and their religions and was very interesting for me to learn about.

In my junior year government, we were required to create a bill. An actual bill typed up and laid out just like one that would be sent to government legislature. We had to choose a topic and write about why it is a good idea. Everything from when it would take effect to what type or permit or documents would be needed to put it into effect was included. Then once everyone’s bills where finished we would have a mock government in the classroom and decide whether or not to pass the bill. I wrote about why teachers should be allowed to have guns in schools. I argued that it would increase the safety for both the staff and the students. Many certifications and qualifications would have to be met in order to gain the concealed carry permit but it would be an option for those who met the requirments. My bill was passed and I received a ninety five on the assignment. During this I learned a lot about how to format a bill and how to address every viewpoint. I had to think about the individual details and really give details and facts to support my view. This assignment helped me learn so much about the legislative branch of government and how the system works. I mean what better way to learn about how bills are created and pushed through the system than to write one yourself!
My second exhibit is of a test that I took in World Studies. I scored a ninety percent on the test. This test was very interesting to me because it was about Ancient Civilizations and their cultures, religions, and forms or writing and recording information. I chose this assignment to be an exhibit because I really enjoyed learning about the different cultures and their religions. Not only did I do well on this test but it helped me learn about different cultures! I have always been fascinated with different viewpoints of religion and by what other cultures believe.

Creating my own bill helped me understand the government more and how laws are actually passed and created. I am grateful for this because it will help me in my future career through my ability to understand how to lay out pieces of work according to rules. But it also helped me learn how to present my idea in a professional manner by backing it up with details and facts. In my future career will have to be able to express my opinion in the workplace when necessary and by presenting facts and details I will be able to better support my idea(s). Learning about other religions also helped me because it educated it to me other people’s beliefs and viewpoints. Keeping myself open to new ideas will help me in my future workplace because I will always have to be willing to hear what other people have to say whether they are employees or patients of mine I have to be willing to listen to their opinion. In my future adult life both of these things will help me because I will better be able to accept new and different viewpoints as well as be able to present my own. I may use these skills in college where I will have papers to present with facts and details or just through the experience of meeting new people from all over throughout college and life in general! Both of these assignments have helped me create skills to use in my future career and adult life. I will have to be open to new ideas and beliefs but also I will have to be able to present my ideas and beliefs in a positive way with good details and support.
