This past year two of my close friends, Jen and Sam, joined show choir. They had not previously been in the class and it was a whole new atmosphere for them. What I mean is that show choir is a class for advanced singers who have to audition to get in. The songs are a lot harder and many of them are acapella. Also, learning the songs goes a lot faster than in the regular choir.
Both of my friends were very surprised at the pace of the class but also how vocally independent you had to be. All of a sudden they were supposed to be ready to hear their voice part once and then sing with the group immediately afterwards. Plus they also had to sing by themselves a lot more. The transition in classroom atmosphere was completely different because show choir is held to higher standards; this is not only because there are more advanced singers but because of the harder music and also the extra concert. The extra concert is the Jazz Bash. The Jazz Bash is designed to showcase the Jazz aspect of the music program of the high school. The groups that perform at the Jazz Bash are the Jazz Singers (Show Choir), the Jazz Band and the guest artist for that year. I had already been in show choir for one year and was use to the challenges that the class presented. During the course of the school year I helped both of my friends adjust to the atmosphere by helping them learn their parts and continuously encouraging them. I even personally worked with one of my friends outside of class to help her learn part of one of the songs.
During the course of the school year I supported my friends as they adjusted into show choir and it quickly turned into their favorite class. My experience in show choir will help me in my future career because I will always have to be encouraging and continuously help patients not only learn music but learn how to deal with their own bodies, minds and behaviors through music. I will always have to work one on one with patients and encourage them though each of their individual challenges. I am very passionate about music and being able to help other people through music is something that I am confident I can do whether it is through simple encouragements or through individual work. These skills will also be useful in my young adult life as I go through college! I will be able to help other people in my classes through my own knowledge and through encouragement. I value my friendships in life a lot and I know that I will be able to support my friends throughout school and life in general. I will always be there for them if they need help or simply to give them a hug and listen to them. I want to make lifelong relationships and I know that road goes to way you have to be willing to be the kind of friend you would like to have.
